How Many Two-Dollar Bills Are in Circulation?

We all know that 2 dollar bills are somewhat rare, which adds to their mystique. But how many two-dollar bills are there in the wild? As it turns out, the number IS relatively small compared to the number of other bills out there, but there might be more than you think, especially considering they are still being printed.

There are a total of 54.6 billion federal reserve notes in circulation. The sum of all these notes equals $2259.3 BILLION.

So, how many of these are $2 bills? There are currently approximately 1.6 billion two-dollar bills in the wild, which equals $3.2 billion. That means that less than .002 of all bills in circulation are deuces. As you can see, $3.2 billion is a sizable number, probably more than most thought, but more than a couple billion is still surprising.

That said, representing less than .002 of all money in circulation is mathematically rare. The fact that $2 is rarely transferred makes it seem all the more unique and memorable.

Check out the chart below, which details the circulation volume per denomination.
